Are Lower E-Book Reader Prices The Start Of A New Pricing Policy?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Amazon, using their Kindle reader family as a vehicle, has been a major player in the development of both the e-book reader and e-book market. The first Kindle was released in November of 2007. In February of 2009, the updated and enhanced Kindle 2.0 hit the market, quickly followed by the large format Kindle DX in the summer of the same year.

The Kindle readers dominated the market and took a 60% share of all e-book reader sales in the USA. The Sony reader, which was actually launched in 2006 before the Kindle, followed in second place with a share of around 35%. Other companies saw the potential of the e-book reader market and launched or updated their own readers to get a slice of the pie.

Competitors like Plastic Logic, Sony, Bookeen, iRex and Barnes and Noble fought for their share of the rapidly growing market, but Amazon’s lead position seemed to be almost impregnable. It was only with the launch of the Apple iPad that any credible competition emerged – slightly surprising since the two devices are very different and are, you would suppose, aimed at different market segments.

Nevertheless, since the release of the iPad, e-book reader prices have pretty much gone into free fall. The Kindle 2.0, which retailed for $ 359 at its February 2009 launch is now priced at just $ 189. The Kindle DX, which has just had a mini makeover and now sports a new higher contrast screen, has had its price slashed from $ 489 to $ 379. Still a pricey piece of kit, but a lot cheaper than before and also way cheaper than even the entry level iPad (which also has a monthly connection fee associated with it). The price of the Barnes and Noble Nook reader has also dropped to just $ 199.

Whilst the price of e-book readers may be falling, the same cannot be said about the price of the e-books which these devices are used to read. Again, Apple had a hand in this. Apple had, in advance of the launch of the iPad, set up their own book store and negotiated a pricing deal with the major publishing houses which basically allowed them to fix the price of their e-book editions at whatever level they wished. The only rider being that they could not offer the same e-book version at a lower price on any other platform. This effectively put paid to Amazon’s policy of pricing e-books at $ 9.99 or lower and was very popular amongst the publishing companies.

Although Amazon had to modify their approach, it wasn’t all bad news for them – or for Barnes and Noble either. Amazon had always given the impression that they were much more interested in book sales – and e-book sales – than they were in hardware sales. How else to explain the fact that they had bent over backwards to make it possible to read Kindle books on such a wide variety of different devices? It’s possible to read Kindle books on the PC, the Mac, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the iPad, the Blackberry and any mobile device that runs Android. The latest price movements mean that Amazon, and other companies such as Barnes and Noble – and now Apple – who have a significant stake not just in the sale of hardware but also in the sale of e-books, can adopt a policy of selling the hardware cheap and making their profit in the sale of e-books over the life of the reading device.

This trend may tend to favor companies which have a foot in both the book and hardware sales camps. Considering the current number of devices which can be used to read Kindle books, it looks as if Amazon will be a major player in the future of digital publishing for some time to come.

Stopping Common Indoor Bugs

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Some of the most common indoor bugs we see anywhere in the world are flies, spiders, fleas and beetles. Nobody likes to have insects indoors, so most people will go to almost any extremes to get rid of these common indoor bugs. The less common indoor bugs may be woodlice, earwigs, scorpions and millipedes or centipedes, although they are not less wanted.

No matter where you are in the world, it can be very hard to keep these common indoor bugs outside, unless you go to the extremes of keeping all your windows and doors closed all of the time, which is quite impossible. I live in Thailand and I know that this is not an option.

So, just what can you do about it? Well, let’s deal with all the flying bugs first, as of all the common indoor bugs, I find them the most unpleasant indoor bug. They are very irritating, buzzing around your head and mosquitoes and other flies can produce painful sores and besides that, all flies carry disease. I hate to see them walking on food, knowing that they have probably just come off some dog’s muck somewhere and now they are spitting on my food in order to taste it with their stinking feet!

My first line of defence is fine-mesh door and widow screens. They are not dear and can be fitted retrospectively to any window. My window meshes slide, so they can protect only one half of a window at a any one time, but I do not find that a problem. You can still set up cross-winds, by opening two or more windows at opposite ends of a room. I just love to see the flies on the mesh trying to get in by day and the mosquitoes doing the same by night. At night, it is wise to turn on as little light indoors as possible so as not to draw these common indoor insects.

My second line of defence is natural predators – lizards, like Geckos (Jin Jok, in Thai). Some people don’t like them in the house either. I can’t say I’m all that keen on them indoors myself, but they are hard to keep out and they do eat hundreds, if not thousands, of indoor bugs every day. I like to see them lying in wait on the outside of the mesh, ready to pounce on any bug trying to wriggle its way through the mesh.

My third line of defence is an indoor bug zapper. You know, the electric, handheld bug zapper that looks like a toy tennis racquet. The come in two forms: battery and rechargeable kinds. They are brilliant at trapping and destroying any flying bug. The inset literally explodes and vaporizes on contact with the fully-charged wires of the indoor bug zapper. If you haven’t tried using one, you really ought to. They are most gratifying. These three defences will keep your house quite much free of flies.

The crawling common indoor bugs are not so much of a problem really. Door screens on self-closers will keep 99% of them out and the Geckos will help too. Spiders can get in pretty very easily, but then, I don’t mind them too much as long as they keep out of my way, as they consume other bugs too. They are on our side to be honest. However, for those who can not bear to trap them and put them outside, the handheld indoor bug zapper works a treat on spiders too.

Sometimes, Fleas can be a problem, if you have cats or dogs, but then if you wash or dust the animal once a month, you should be able to keep these common indoor bugs under control fairly easily. However, there are two final methods that we use. Once a week, before we go out for the day, we spray every room with fly killer and every six-months we spray any rugs or carpets with an insect killer containing permethrin, which will survive washing and vacuuming for that long without losing its ability to kill common indoor bugs on contact. If you stick with these measures, you should be able to keep your home or office quite free of the most common indoor bugs and the less common indoor bug as well.

Hand-held Mosquito Zapper

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

The electric insect killer is the best way of ridding your immediate vicinity of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The electric bug killer vaporizes any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantly on contact with a nice, loud, electrical ‘zap’!

However, this is not to say that the hand held bug zapper cannot be used outside, as long as it is not raining. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the indoor bug killer dry and definitely do not use it while you are standing in water!

Models do vary greatly, but there are basically only two kinds of hand held insect killer: the battery operated bug killer and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both are equally effective at killing bugs and employ the same principle.

The hand held insect killer looks like a ‘kids’ tennis racquet, but with three sets of ’strings’, which are in fact wires. The innermost network of wires becomes live at the push of a button while the other two grids, one on either side, are earths.

When a bug is trapped between the wires of the indoor insect killer, it creates a short, which evaporates it instantly with a loud crack and a flash. The indoor bug zapper will kill other bugs too, but they just fry instead of explode.

I have been using the rechargeable sort for about five years and am extremely satisfied with the hand held bug zapper. In fact, the electric insect zapper has come a long way over the last few years. A fully charged electric bug zapper is powerful enough to last for a few hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, when unused, for weeks without any noticeable discharge.

The rechargeable battery pack will take serious use for the best part of a year, although its capability to hold a charge for several weeks slowly diminishes after six or seven months.

The most recent indoor insect killer I’ve had has a main on/off switch, an LED that shines when it is activated (the brightness of this light also indicates the battery’s strength) and a light that comes on when the zapper is plugged in for recharge.

The instructions suggest that it should be (re)charged for sixteen hours. I usually put mine on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held bug killer shows a marked increase in performance with only a couple of hours charging.

The latest version I’ve seen also comes with a powerful beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very useful when out in the garden, but I’m not sure whether it’s meant to lure the flies in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re feeling bored or just vindictive. You know, a bit like an Anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my hand held insect killer for that too, but the beam uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the electric bug killer is a big asset to any outdoor event. The indoor insect zapper is useful to ‘clean out’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unequalled for evening mosquitoes and it will clear a lunch table of wasps as well.

An Understanding Of Radio Frequency Identification Systems

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Radiofrequency ID system has existed since the 1940s and has in no way ceased widening its range of application. RFID is a system with numerous components. It has semiconductor transponders, readers, and computer software that facilitates consistent data feeds.

An internal circuit and antenna are essential in every RFID transponder. The IC is implanted with an electronic product code (EPC) making it unique among remaining tagged items everywhere. When the label is within range of an RFID scanning device, info concerning the tagged piece is sent out over the antenna to the scanner, giving data to a processing system.

RFID technology was first applied for combatant objectives in WWII. Since then, it has been utilized in a number of fields. The application became a tremendous benefit in automotive, security, shipping, travel, as well as a number of other business applications.

Though it was often considered as some sort of cordless bar coding technique, RFID is better by far. Scanning with RFID transponder remains efficient even if obstacles stand between the item and the detector. Furthermore, these transponders can easily scan an item as much as 90 feet.

RFID is really a self-reliant tracking method. This detection strategy functions free of human administration. Furthermore, it can easily read several tags all together even while preserving higher degree reliability in analyzing each tagged item.

RFID systems are categorized in two categories. The first type comes from from its storage and retrieval facility: Read-only or Read-write and Passive or Activated superpower sources. The second kind depends upon the frequency it employs: Low Frequency, High Frequency, or Ultra-high Frequency.

Read-only labels can only acquire stored data say for example product information and stuff like that. These kind of systems can easily simplify fabrication and distribution systems. Read-write tags in contrast are purposefully built to both interpret and input data.

In a passive method, an RFID scanner emits an energy field that sets off and powers the tag. Without getting a scanning device inside 90 feet, the ID could not render any kind of information. A passive system isn’t as helpful and is rather inferior when it comes to dependability when compared to a dynamic system.

An active system offers electric packs included in tags to trigger transmittal of information between tag and scanner. These devices tend to be more urbane and have the ability to scan broader ranges. Latest models of these scanners may also come with thermal scanners.

Russell Hobbs Toaster Review – 3 Top Toasters By Russell Hobbs

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Are you searching for a Russell Hobbs Toaster? In this article I will show you 3 leading toasters from this corporation.

The company Russell Hobbs was founded in 1952. Since then they have been mounting stars, taking in awards and making lots of families delighted as they continue to make small house hold electronics.

There are a a small number of toasters that Russell Hobbs has manufactured and almost all of them have proved to be terrific. Some of them are not excellent but they are good. Below I am listing the top 3 from this company.

Number 1 – Russell Hobbs 13766 Classic 2 Slice Toaster

This toaster will give you constancy with the results and evenly brown your toast. If you enjoy big slices of bread this is also a wonderful toaster since it has space to fit large slices of bread in if you so chose to put them there. If you make bread at home you this is a terrific feature to have.

Number 2 – Russell Hobbs 14361 Classic 2 Slice Toaster

While this is a wonderful toaster I just do not find it attractive to the eye. It is about performance though isn’t it? It does allow you to toast your bread but it’s a little slower than some of the other toasters. If you are in no big hurry then you do not need to worry about it.

Number 3 – Russell Hobbs 13791 Urban 4 Slice compact Toaster

This is the Grand Daddy of toasters with 4 slices but it’s compacted design will not require your complete counter top. Your toaster can easily get done at 2 times the speed since you have two times the toasting slots. These slots are not as big as the others though and might necessitate you to turn over your bread to toast it all the way.

I hope you have enjoyed this Russell Hobbs Toaster Review

Onkyo Skw204 Bass Reflex Powered Subwoofer Black – Are They A Rip Off Or Good Buy?

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

It gets more important every day to make sure that you are saving money – especially if you are on a budget. Having looked around the internet I am sure that you have seen the high price subwoofer and may not be pleased with what you are seeing.

The Onkyo SKE204 Subwoofer is a good buy according to the price and the specs of this speaker but let’s look at some other information on these speakers. Not everyone has the same opinion on things so I will just put the facts out there and allow you to decide on your own.

First off as we already know the Onkyo skw204 Bass Reflex Powered Subwoofer Black is very reasonably priced for it’s specs. It claims to put out some great deep bass and allow you to enjoy the experience of a subwoofer without paying an arm and a leg. I have looked over this claim and have found a few mixed feelings – as I said different people… different opinions.

One user said that he loved the system because of it’s ability to put out high quality bass without the “one note” sound that many other subwoofers in it’s price range. There is nothing more annoying than thinking you got a great buy on a speaker and then coming out to find that while you might have saved some money you also will not have the experience you had hoped for.

One little problem that I read about with these speakers is that when it is cranked up too high the grill and box seem to rattle a bit. I am not sure what too high is because that is what the user wrote but from the other feedback that was offered it seems like the system would had to be pumped up quite loudly. A normal movie or music experience should not cause the distortion in my opinion. If you want to really wake the neighbors up I would suggest trying out another system that doesn’t rattle at high levels.

Are there a lot of wires that you are running near this speaker? There may be a problem if you do run wires near this speaker since it is pretty sensitive to other wires that run nearby or over it’s wires. Like I said though – it’s a preference thing,if you don’t have wires to run over it,there is no worry about this con of the Onkyo skw204 Bass Reflex Powered Subwoofer Black.

In my opinion ( and others ),all in all this is a great speaker for the price and even if you are on a budget you should be able to afford it.

Hand Held Bug Zapper

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

If you are not yet familiar with the electric insect zapper, you are really going to love it and if you have had one before, I bet you’ll welcome it back like an old, long-lost friend! The electric insect zapper does just what it says it does: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, very effectively.

Any insect that comes into contact with the electronic insect killer is fried. Smaller bugs like gnats and mosquitoes are vaporized with a very satisfying flash and a crack. Larger insect, like house flies and wasps die, but don’t explode like the smaller ones.

How many times have these flying bugs taken the edge off an otherwise enjoyable evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a decent night’s sleep, because you know there’s at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me hundreds of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get one’s own back with the hand held bug killer.

I don’t like killing anything without just reason – I’m married to a Buddhist- but mosquitoes? I’m sorry, they have to go. And the hand held bug killer dispatches them without any more ado. No waiting and hoping they’ll fly into the ultraviolet light and then into the mesh. No, one sweep of the electronic insect killer and the mosie’s gone and you can hear whether you killed her or not. (I say her, because the sucking mosquitoes always are females – honest, I wasn’t being sexist).

Basically, there are two sorts of hand held bug zapper. There is the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both operate on the same principle, but I prefer the rechargeable kind, although I guess you could use rechargeable batteries too. However, I think that they would be more expensive that the bug zapper in the first place. Anyway, I have had a electric insect killer of the rechargeable kind for five years and I am ecstatic about them.

Nowadays, I spend a lot of time in Thailand with my wife, so you can bet your bottom dollar that I give my electric bug killer a good work-out practically every evening. We usually eat in the garden in the evening and all socializing is done outside by tradition, especially in the rural areas, where we live. So it comes in real handy. I also use my electronic insect zapper to ’sweep’ the bedroom for bugs before we go to sleep at night. Just like a CIA agent.

The hand held insect killer seems to improve every time I buy one, which makes it difficult to give you definite specifications. The hand held bug zappers I bought four or five years ago, sometimes failed within six to nine months of purchase, although their ability to store a charge was less after four or five months.

However, the new handheld bug zapper will last 9-12 months and still be very pokey after nine months. My latest one even has a powerful light called a headlamp incorporated into it. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be for, but if you feel that vengeance is sweet, you can lure mosquitoes with it and then kill them with your electronic insect killer.

Polk Audio Rm6750 – The 411 on Polk Audio Rm6750

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Looking for a great 5.1 speaker system? The Polk Audio RM6750 is a great choice that you can consider. This speaker’s reasonable price attract s many people. What do the consumer reviews say about this speaker though? We are going to take a look to see what is out there… what are the pros and cons?

Out of all of the reviews that I have read almost every review has been a glowing review and only talks about how great the polk audio rm6750 speakers are. They are much cheaper than many other systems that are comparable.

By the stats you will be able to easily see they are well worth the money.

Product Features

*Surround sound package consists of 2 surround speakers,2 front speakers,1 center channel speaker and 1 subwoofer.

* Satellite and center-channel speakers utilize 3.25-inch polymer-composite cone drivers for distortion-free midrange

*The package features 0.5 inch dome tweeter in each of the satellite speakers and there is a 0.75-inch dome tweeter in the center speaker.

*The subwoofer utilizes an eight-inch long throw dynamic-balance poly-composite driver for longer driver excursion and better linearity

* Satellite and center-channel speakers can accommodate 6.1 or 7.1 channel systems

The Technical Details

*The brand Name: Polk Audio

* Model: AM6755-B

* Color Name: Black

* Speaker Type: Home theater speaker

* Speaker Amplification Type: Active subwoofer, passive satellites

* Speakers Maximum Output Power: 100 Watts

* Speakers Response Bandwidth: 40 – 24000 Hz

* Speaker Connectivity: Wired

* Depth: 5.0 inches

* Height: 6.5 inches

* Width: 4.0 inches

* Weight: 42.6 pounds

* Warranty: 5 years warranty

Some people have not been blown away by the speakers and it’s performance but were still quite satisfied with the small satellite’s quality. There may not be a true replacement for larger,more power speakers however. These speakers seem to lack the strength that is needed at some lower frequencies. The deep male voices aren’t as clear as they should be at times. The center speaker seems to have the most problem with this.

Just like anything else in life … bigger is usually better. If you get something that costs more or has more power then you most likely are going to get a better sound or quality than if you were to get the smaller version. If you are on a budget these speakers will do nicely.
